Chinese state media has criticised a new bill passed by the US House of Representatives that would force a divestment of TikTok, while parent company ByteDance and Beijing have remained silent.

Apple hat nach Aufforderung der chinesischen Behörden mehrere westliche Messenger-Anwendungen wie WhatsApp und Signal aus seinem App Store entfernt. Beijing gab nur eine vage Begründung für die Anordnung.

"Banning an entire app in the US would be a massive attack on the very concept of an open web. And that’s really unfortunate, given that the US used to be the world’s most vocal supporter of the web being kept open and free."

TikTok is heading to its moment of truth in Washington, with Congress on a fast track to approve a bill aimed at forcing the social-media platform’s Chinese parent ByteDance Ltd. to divest its controversial ownership stake.

In the last week alone, nearly a dozen other TikTok influencers have posted videos promoting Lemon8 that include a link to download the app. It’s unclear if ByteDance paid them for their posts.
Research from SimilarWeb in July last year found Lemon8 had just 6,360 active daily users.

Senators were reportedly told that TikTok is able to spy on the microphone on users' devices, track keystrokes, and “determine what the users are doing on other apps”, it’s worth asking if lawmakers are happy for American apps to do the same things.

A permanent split with Chinese apps was less disruptive than many expected. Most users turned to Instagram or YouTube in the wake of the ban.

A deal probably would be too complicated and costly for such a short time frame, experts say. Opponents of the bill say that means the app would probably be banned under the legislation.

The news about TikTok being one step closer to getting restricted in America is no longer an infatuation.American lawmakers have passed their vote in favor of the TikTok bill at the House of Representatives and now, we’re just one step closer to seeing that come into play, provided the Senate feels the same way.

The US has dealt with foreign propaganda for ages. And we don’t ban it. Part of free speech is that you have to deal with the fact that nonsense propaganda and disinformation exists.
